Shift Team Leader - Leicestershire

The Opportunity

We are recruiting on behalf of an established operator within the UK energy sector. The facility runs continuously, requiring a capable Shift Team Leader who can make sound operational decisions, maintain high safety standards and support the team during both routine operations and plant issues.

You will lead a small operational shift team and provide guidance to employees and contractors working on site. The position offers exposure to a broad range of plant, including turbines, boilers, pumps, water treatment equipment and associated auxiliary systems.

Success in the role will be measured through safe working, environmental compliance, plant availability, accurate reporting and the continued development of the shift team.

Key Responsibilities

• Take responsibility for the safe and effective operation of the facility throughout the shift.

• Lead, supervise and support shift personnel, providing clear technical guidance and operational direction.

• Operate, monitor and control plant systems through DCS and HMI platforms.

• Manage plant start-ups, shutdowns and changes in operating conditions safely and efficiently.

• Complete plant walk-downs, inspections and routine checks to assess equipment condition and performance.

• Monitor emissions data and ensure operations remain within environmental permit conditions.

• Coordinate minor reactive maintenance and planned plant stoppages, raising work requests through the maintenance management system.

• Supervise the testing and treatment of boiler, cooling and other plant water systems.

• Maintain complete and accurate shift logs, operational records and plant performance data.

• Identify and escalate operational, safety or environmental risks promptly.

• Contribute to the review and improvement of operating procedures and safe systems of work.

• Maintain high standards of housekeeping and overall plant condition.

What We’re Looking For

Essential

• Operational experience gained within power generation, steam raising or a comparable industrial process environment.

• Experience working across both control room and plant floor operations.

• Demonstrable experience using DCS, HMI or SCADA control systems.

• A relevant HNC, NVQ or equivalent engineering qualification, or suitable time- served experience.

• The ability to lead and communicate effectively with operational employees and contractors.

• A logical and methodical approach to fault-finding and operational problem- solving.

• The confidence to coach, mentor and develop members of the shift team.

• Practical mechanical aptitude, including the ability to support minor adjustments and repairs.

• Competent IT skills for reporting, record-keeping and the use of computerised systems.

• Flexibility to work within a continuous 24/7 shift rota and provide additional shift cover when required.

Desirable

• Experience working with a formal Permit-to-Work system. Full training can be provided.

• A recognised health and safety qualification, such as IOSH.

• NEBOSH or BOAS qualifications.

• Electrical Authorised Person or Senior Authorised Person experience.
