Deputy Team Leader – Energy from Waste Plant

The Opportunity

An experienced plant operator or supervisor is required to join the operations team at an established energy-from-waste facility in Wolverhampton.

This is a hands-on operational role with genuine responsibility. You will support the Team Leader in maintaining the safe and efficient operation of the plant’s boilers and steam turbine, while helping to coordinate the wider shift team. When the Team Leader is unavailable, you will take responsibility for plant operations and the supervision of operations staff.

The position would suit someone with experience of high-pressure boiler and steam turbine plant who is ready to take on greater leadership responsibility while remaining closely involved in day-to-day operations.

The Role

Working from the control room and across the wider facility, you will monitor plant performance, respond to operational issues and help ensure the optimum generation of steam.

You will use the Distributed Control System (DCS), control panels, gauges and alarms to monitor temperatures, pressures, flow rates and other operating conditions. The role also involves regular plant inspections, accurate shift reporting and the coordination of incoming and outgoing waste.

Safety is central to the position. You will act as a Safety Controller within the Permit to Work system and take the lead in implementing emergency procedures when required.

Key Responsibilities

• Support the Team Leader with the safe and efficient operation of the boilers, steam turbine and associated plant.

• Assume responsibility for plant operations and shift supervision in the Team Leader’s absence.

• Monitor operating conditions through the DCS, control systems, gauges and alarms.

• Identify potential operational problems and take appropriate action before they affect plant performance.

• Allocate work to operations staff and provide clear direction throughout the shift.

• Coordinate incoming and outgoing waste and operate the overhead crane when required.

• Maintain accurate shift logs, emissions records and handover information.

• Report plant defects through the maintenance management system or directly to the appropriate manager.

• Coordinate the response to planned repairs, breakdowns, blockages and changes to central plant systems.

• Supervise emergency procedures and respond to out-of-hours calls and deliveries.

• Carry out plant inspections at height, at ground level and within confined spaces.

• Support cleaning schedules and help maintain a safe, orderly working environment.

• Act as a Safety Controller under the site’s Permit to Work procedures.

• Report accidents, incidents and unsafe working practices, and contribute to fire drills and evacuation exercises.

What We’re Looking For

Essential

• Experience or a strong practical understanding of operating high-pressure boilers and steam turbine plant.

• Previous experience supervising, coordinating or leading a team.

• The confidence to take responsibility for plant operations when the Team Leader is unavailable.

• Experience monitoring plant through a DCS or similar control-room system.

• A strong understanding of safe working practices within an industrial or process environment.

• Willingness and ability to work at height, in confined spaces and across different areas of the plant.

• Ability to maintain accurate operating records and communicate effectively during shift handovers.

• A valid Forklift Truck qualification.

Desirable

• Experience operating a front-loading shovel.

• A current first aid qualification.

• Previous experience acting within a Permit to Work system.

• Experience within energy from waste, power generation or a comparable process plant.
